Run-odoo is deployed on top of 2 main cloud providers services:
- The VALUE offer with Digital Ocean (best-used forDEV / STAGING / SMALL PRODUCTIONS)
- The PERFORMANCE offer with Amazon Web Services (AWS for ALL ENVIRONMENTS including medium and large-sized PRODUCTION systems)
¶ Choosing between VALUE and PERFORMANCE
We propose as a standard to compare the VALUE and PERFORMANCE offers according to the following five criteria measured on a scale from 1 to 5 (RED to GREEN):
- Cost: Assessment of the cheapest offer. Greener is cheaper. This means that the VALUE offer on a monthly basis will be cheaper than the PERFORMANCE offer.
- Performance: A comparison and benchmarks were made between the VALUE and PERFORMANCE offers in the same regions and with allegedly similar specs. The following conclusions imposed themselves:
- Although both the VALUE and PERFORMANCE offers use dedicated instances, the usage of STANDARD DigitalOcean instances comes with important fluctuations, especially during business peak hours where the actual CPU efficiency tends to drop.
- The choice to propel the PERFORMANCE Odoo Service with AWS EC2 instances comes with a general overall performance benefit of 15 to 30% in average when compared with the VALUE offer
- Capacity / Users: While we restricted the VALUE offer to a maximum 60 concurrent Odoo users MAX, the PERFORMANCE offer extends to 400 and can even be extended further more for specific needs.
- Security: Greener is better. Although the public traffic between the end user of Odoo and your Run-Odoo VALUE and PERFORMANCE infrastructure both benefit from Cloudflare’s DNS filtering / relaying / WAF and CDN features, the PERFORMANCE offer also benefits from a few extra important advantages
- With the PERFORMANCE offer, the usage of an elastic public IP coupled with the addition of a dedicated Run-odoo VPC constitute a real security advantage.
- The usage of CloudFront services between CloudFlare and the AWS instance itself is also presenting huge benefits in terms of security.
- Operating system patching and image upgrades can be supported by Ubuntu Pro on PERFORMANCE developments, which means a perfect reactivity, instant CVE security patches and live-kernel patching offering an instant upgrade with no interruption of service.
- Compliance: Greener is better. In this section, we are referring to everything related to the following topics:
- Data security.
- Data Privacy.
- Traceability of actions (internal and external)
Corporate clients, governmental or financial entities, as well as “data sensitive” industries who generally issue their own compliance and security assessments and requirements are very strongly recommended to pick a PERFORMANCE offer for any deployment involving production-grade data (NB: It is common practice for some developers to use PRODUCTION backups inside STAGING instances for troubleshooting purposes or specific window cases involving training or debugging. In that case, we would like to remind you that the security of the STAGING instance becomes as important as the security of PRODUCTION since they might contain the same data at some point)
